YEEZY x Gap collab

Yesterday, the clothing company Gap released a statement for a new clothing line called “Yeezy Gap, which will be introduced in the first half of 2021. Yeezy’s design studio, under Mr. West’s creative direction, plans to create “modern, elevated basics for men, women and kids at accessible price points.” This sent fashion and Kanye fans excited. While I am not surprised about this, as Kanye has stated before he would like to make his designs for the masses, I am intrigued how YEEZY will fit, not only in the Gap world, but fashion world.

If you currently go on to gap.com to see their current clothing it’s very basic to say the least. Throughout the clothing from their adult line, all tea,no shade; they have overpriced basics.

Both are the new arrival sections (when page was screenshot they were having a up to 60% off sale)

Now, gap never claimed to be the pinnacle of fashion. So, I’m not surprised that they made a 10 year partnership with YEEZY Studios. From the pictures above, you can tell that the gaps style/aesthetic is more of a laid back, easy breezy, and casual. While they do dip their toes into some colors and prints, they never fully submerge themselves and go all the way with their clothing. Their clothing is very safe.

They also have “Lookbooks”.

The looks in question

Their collaboration with Kanye will probably attract the street wear and younger customers. Cause also no shade, but Gap also has a more older vibe, not in old people vibe, but just an adult clothing store. As in more practical clothing like basic, priorly mentioned, pajamas, khakis, sweaters, etc. They have clothes you can build off of, but will not be the main attention grabber from your outfit. With many other companies adopting into the street wear style, it’s better that the gap joined better late than never and try to catch up with the fashion times.

Furthermore, Gap announced the line was going to be “modern, elevated basics for men, women and kids at accessible price points.” Now, I want to know if it’s going to accessible price points for gap or accessible price points for YEEZY because those would be two different prices. From the screenshots above and down below, you can see that Gap’s clothing (not on sale) can range from $9.95 -$79.96+, while YEEZY clothing can range from $100+ and thats if it’s not being resold, because if so then you’re probably looking at double.

The company will probably charge more than there own clothing, but probably not as much as the actual YEEZY clothes. I am also wondering if this will be like the H&M designer collabs or even the YEEZY collections. Once they sell out are they going to restock since this is the everyday gap and not full blown designer?

I am honestly looking forward to this because of the intention of this. Back in a 2015 interview West states, “I’d like to be the Steve Jobs of Gap,” with Style.com shortly after he debuted his Adidas Originals collection. He said that he wanted his designs and clothing to reach the masses. While he already had gotten far with the Adidas collaboration, Kanye wanted to get even more “home grown American”. I say this because when I think of Gap, I think of their Fourth of July tee’s, khakis or polos, very American and homey. Kanye wants his clothing to be more than a luxury, he wants to it to be a commodity.

This new line will attract a lot of non-gap shoppers to not only browse the YEEZY collection but the regular gap brand as well. This will especially be seen in stores, where they will have the YEEZY line intermingled among their own clothing. Or will have that line in a certain part of the store where you HAVE to practically pass the whole store, you know how stores are lol. This will also elevate the style of their already there customer base. I do hope that it is affordable, STYLISH clothing that can make everyone feel good. I mean from that logo that he presented of “YZY” in the Gap signature font and logo, he might take the classics, blue jeans, polos (they were signature at one point), sweaters, and revamp them with his team that includes Mowalola. Looking forward to this ! What do you think about this collaboration ? Let me know !
